چکیده

The attentional blink (AB) refers to the impairment in consciously perceiving the second of two targets presented in close temporal proximity (200 – 500ms) in a rapid serial visual presentation paradigm. The present paper is a preliminary report describing a conceptual and partially computational model of the AB based on the LIDA (Learning Intelligent Distribution Agent) cognitive architecture. The model aims to provide a biologically plausible explanation of the AB, explaining a wide range of AB-related phenomena, among other mental phenomena accounted for by LIDA. Computational results in a basic visual AB paradigm are presented and compared to human data. The Attentional Blink When subjects are asked to identify two targets separated by a short time (200-500ms) in a stream of distractors, an Attentional Blink (AB) occurs subjects often fail to report the second target (see Fig 1). In this paper we will focus on the AB in rapid serial visual presentations (RSVP) of pictures (however, the AB has been shown to occur across a wide range of stimuli types and modalities – see (Martens &

A Computational Model of Attentional Learning in a Cognitive Agent

Biologically inspired cognitive architectures should faithfully model the high-level modules and processes of cognitive neuroscience. Also, they are expected to contribute to the BICA “challenge of creating a real-life computational equivalent of the human mind.” One important component of the mind is attention and attentional learning. In this paper, we describe conceptual and computational mo...

Modelling the Attentional Blink

This paper describes a computational model of the Attentional Blink constructed using the dual-stage model proposed by [1] and also incorporating a token based account of working memory [2]. This model reproduces data from a number of blink paradigms and makes predictions that lag-1 sparing is temporal and not sequential in origin. A further prediction is that enhancing the distinctiveness of T...

Attentional Blink: An Internal Traffic Jam?

In cognitive models, cognitive control can be measured in terms of the number of control states that are used to do the task. In most cases more control leads to better performance. Attentional Blink is an example in which the opposite is true: more control leads to poorer performance. A hybrid ACTR/Leabra model is used to model both highand low-control participants using two and one control st...

The role of the locus coeruleus in mediating the attentional blink: a neurocomputational theory.

The attentional blink refers to the transient impairment in perceiving the 2nd of 2 targets presented in close temporal proximity. In this article, the authors propose a neurobiological mechanism for this effect. The authors extend a recently developed computational model of the potentiating influence of the locus coeruleus-norepinephrine system on information processing and hypothesize that a ...

Computational and Experimental Evaluation of the Attentional Blink: Testing The Simultaneous Type Serial Token Model

A reduced version of the Simultaneous Type Serial Token Model is presented. This model embraces two theories of temporal attention: Chun and Potter’s two-stage theory and Kanwisher’s types-tokens theory. We explain the proposed model and show how it reproduces key data from the Attentional Blink phenomenon. In addition, we verify experimentally predictions arising from the model.
